Plot Summary
This story is the compilation of multiple stories into one; an anthology if you will. There are 23 short stories compiled into one book, written by 23 different authors. The themes of these short stories all center around the idea of keeping hope and staying positive, especially in hard and difficult times. Some of my favorite teen writers are featured in this book including Libba Bray, Ally Carter, Gayle Forman, and Jason Reynolds.
Critical Analysis (Including Cultural Markers)
I think the idea to compile all these popular authors into one novel was a brilliant idea. It was even more brilliant to include all short stories that feature one similar theme. The overall effect of including stories with a similar theme makes this novel seem more complete and whole, rather than just a bunch of random short stories bound together.
Another thing I appreciate about this book is the inclusivity in it. As you read, you see such a wide variety of cultures, beliefs, and ethnicities. The first story is written by a man who claims to be gay and Jewish. This in comparison to Angie Thomas, a typical southern black woman is completely different. Then there is Marie Lu, a Chinese American author that voices more traditional Chinese culture. All of these authors, and more, are what help to make up this diverse novel.
Overall I feel that this story was so well put together and the idea of compiling so many popular writers into one book was a novel idea (see what I did there?). I would be excited to see a new volume of this book released with a different theme and similar writers. Perhaps this is an idea for the future.
