B: Plot Summary

Little Bonnie and Ben are being babysat one afternoon by their favorite babysitter, Doug.

As the night toils down to bedtime, both Bonnie and Ben attempt to procrastinate, as most

children tend to do, by requesting stories and rhymes from Doug. The ever accommodating

Doug tells nursery rhymes with ease, appeasing the children momentarily, until they request

more. Eventually Doug shuts down the story-telling session and sends the children to bed

with a tuck and a good night kiss.

 

C: Critical Analysis (Including cultural markers)

Mem Fox tells the tale of two children being put to sleep by their babysitter. This story

progresses with page after page of familiar rhymes that transcend generations.  


The illustrations are of universal “white” children and a “white” babysitter. They all have

white-peach colored skin tones, while the children have brown hair, and the babysitter

has orange hair. There does not seem to be much culture depicted in the story. 


The author and illustrator, alike, portray simple stories without the consideration of culture.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, however children of other cultures will find it difficult to

relate to this story because they will not be able to see themselves in the children in this

story. Stories, especially ones written with younger audiences in mind, should be inclusive

of all cultures, races, and genders, and this story does not do so.

Infographics: Information in Picture Form

   Just as the title suggests, infographics are simply images with statics and numbers thrown in. It is generally something that someone can read by just glancing at. Infographics are a good way of informing the public or getting your point across about a certain topic. When creating your own infographic , there are many programs available online to help. For the purpose of this post, I will be comparing three different websites; Easelly , Piktochart , and Infogram , to see which (in my opinion) is easiest and most user friendly with creating an infographic .    All three programs that I played around with to create an inforgraphic required me to create an account. Plot Summary Jayna is an orphan and has only her older brother Rob to rely on. Rob has been called to the war in the Pacific, and Jayna is left with only her landlady, Celine. Jayna decides to go to New York and try to find any possible family. After finding a French cookbook with a photograph of a bakery among Rob’s things, Jayna goes in search of the Gingersnap bakery. Once there, she finds much more than she could have imagined.
