In the novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, the story centers around Starr Carter, an
average African American teenager. Starr lives in a predominantly African American poor
neighborhood with her mother, father, and brother. She attends a wealthy private school in a
“white” part of town. Her life seems just fine until one night, Starr caught a ride home after a
party with her friend Khalil. That night, Khalil was shot by a police officer, sparking outrage from
her hometown of Garden Heights. 
Starr is caught between two worlds. One with her family and friends in Garden Heights, where
she grew up, and one with all her friends that she goes to school with and where her aunt and
uncle live. 
With the seemingly unnecessary death of Khalil, rioting begins in the streets of Garden Heights.
Starr is interviewed by a local news reporter which she has been urged to do by her Uncle and
police detective, Carlos. Along with the rioting, the news has been slandering Khalil’s name,
calling him a drug dealer. This further infuriates the neighborhood. There are drug wars that go
on, but mostly by King, a large drug lord who lives in the neighborhood and flaunts his status. 
As the story continues, Starr works up the courage to go to court and fight for Khalil. She is
trying to get the officer who shot Khalil locked up and charged with murder. Unfortunately, the
jury finds him innocent and the neighborhood holds a major riot. Starr becomes the voice for
injustice and persecution.   
This novel speaks on the unfair treatment of African Americans in America to this day. It talks of
the racism that still exists and it makes the reader question what will be down to stand up against
the injustice? As the story closes, a question is posed to the reader; what will you do to change
the unfair treatment? 
For fans of The Hate U Give, I recommend reading On the Come Up. This book is also written by Angie Thomas, and it also centers around a young African American teenage girl trying to overcome unfair circumstances due to her skin color.

Infographics: Information in Picture Form

   Just as the title suggests, infographics are simply images with statics and numbers thrown in. It is generally something that someone can read by just glancing at. Infographics are a good way of informing the public or getting your point across about a certain topic. When creating your own infographic , there are many programs available online to help. For the purpose of this post, I will be comparing three different websites; Easelly , Piktochart , and Infogram , to see which (in my opinion) is easiest and most user friendly with creating an infographic .    All three programs that I played around with to create an inforgraphic required me to create an account.
