  1. Plot Summary
The story of the Romanov family comes alive in this terrific novel written by Candace
Fleming. The story follows the lives of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra through
the political turmoil, and eventual abdication from the throne of Russia. Along the way,
chaos rears its ugly head from the uprising of the Russian people. The Romanovs rely
heavily on Rasputin, a holy man, that many voice their disapproval of. Nicholas and
Alexandra try to hold their family together amongst the chaos. With a sad ending
and an even more infamous legacy, the story of the Romanov family is brought to life on
the pages of this novel.

  1. Critical Analysis
This story holds such a fascinating account over the lives of the Russian royal family;
The Romanovs. I have always been fascinated by this story of naivety, greed, murder,
and faith. The way Candace Fleming lays out this intriguing story makes for a fantastic
read. I learned so much about this time period, that it has inspired me to continue
researching more. Although going into this novel most everything I knew about the
Romanov family came from the 1997 cartoon movie, Anastasia, I learned so many things
about this fascinating time in history. For example, I knew that Rasputin had been
murdered, but I hadn’t known the circumstances around his death. The different points
of view given by the men that were involved in the death, helped the reader better
understand the motivations of this crime and picture the actions that had taken place.
