  1. Plot Summary
The three little tamales decide they don’t want to be eaten at Tio Jose and Tia Lupe’s
taqueria, so they ran away.  The first tamale made his house out of sagebrush. The second
tamale made his house out of cornstalks. The third tamale built his house out of a cactus. The
big bad wolf comes along and blows down the first and second tamale’s homes. He tries to
blow down the third tamale’s home, but instead gets cactus thorns in his paws. The big bad
wolf doesn’t give up. He tries to go down the chimney to get to the tamales, but the clever
tamales place a pot of boiling water in the chimney. The big bad wolf falls into the water, gets
scared, and runs away to never bother the three little tamales again.

  1. Critical Analysis

A fun version of The Three Little Pigs. I can relate to this book, living in Texas my entire life. I enjoy the
“spanglish” spoken and the rhymed lines from the tamales and the big bad wolf. Favorite lines include,
“Senor Lobo, muy lindo, I’m sorry to say, I won’t let you in, so please go away.” and “I’ll huff and I’ll puff
like a Texas tornado and blow your casita from here to Laredo!” The pictures create a more fun
atmosphere and add to the silliness of the story.

  • 2011 Volunteer State Book Award

  • Goodreads Review:
Simply a superb version of The Three Little Pigs tale but this time tamales and a Wolf are the main
characters! The illustrations are the real star of this book! They are so whimsical they seem to jump
right off the page! Your little one will laugh from start to finish and so will you!”
