  1. Plot Summary
A little girl is devastated when her favorite pair of purple sneakers fall apart. Her mother takes her shopping for new shoes. The little girl is excited to see all the different types of shoes out there. Loafers, Mary Janes, Saddle shoes, etc. There are so many options to consider. And buying a new pair of shoes is a big deal. What should she go with? Not flip flops, they might make her trip. Not, “Toe shoes, snow shoes, swimming flippers.” “So sneakers it is!.”

  1. Critical Analysis
I loved this cute little story about a girl who goes shopping with her mom. If I had a daughter, this would be the perfect bedtime story to read with her, after a long day of shopping. The author, Marilyn Singer, takes the reader on a quest to find the perfect pair of shoes to replace the favorite purple sneakers. I like the child’s perspective on the different types of shoes to choose from. For example, in the poem, Mary Janes, the little girl comments on the name of the shoes, “Well, why not Saras?Amys? Sues?.” The purity of the child’s opinions are humorous to adult minds. Another example of humor comes from Moccasins, “Walk like a deer...You can clomp like a cow any old day.”
The short little rhymes make for a quick, sing-songy read. And the illustrations add to the child-like effect of the story. Overall a very cute read. Would recommend as a gift for a little girl, but probably not the best book choice for a little boy.

  1. Review Excerpts
  • “Singer weaves a collection of fanciful poems into a clever salute to shoes.” - Kirkus Review
  • “The book was good, but I think she should have picked a different type of shoe. Maybe the flip flops.”- Bella, age 6

  1. Connections
  • While reading this book, I kept thinking of the Fancy Nancy book series by Jane O’Connor, maybe pair the two together
  • There is also a television series from the Fancy Nancy book series
